I think it would be amazing to look up into the night sky and see the flicker of city lights on the surface of the moon. Tell ya what, why don't we make it voluntary. You get to choose where your tax dollars go, space exploration, social programs or wars.I can tell you where mine would go.
Invite it to join you for dinner?

“I'm pursuing an engineering major right now... but I've always been into Astronomy. It seems like something that should be more of a hobby that a career choice though so I never seriously considered majoring in it.

Truly depressed people (as mentioned in the article) will seek social isolation, so they will probably avoid a situation like participating in a study. However, I think they're just trying to show that feeling depressed will lead to better problem solving. So while the participants may not actually be suffering from depression, their depressed moods may be helping them with the math problems. On the other hand, there might be a peak at which feeling blue will help with problem solving. Chronic depression may elicit learned helplessness when it comes to problem solving which would be detrimental to the results. As for your other point, I agree, rumination and social isolation simply leads to more rumination and social isolation. It's a vicious circle: You feel alone, so you keep thinking about how terrible it is to be alone and the mistakes you had to make you like that. You start pushing people away from you because you want to reaffirm your loneliness (self-fulfilling prophesy), leading to more feelings of being alone. Even though you may know why you are feeling alone and thus depressed, say because you're afraid of rejection, it does not mean that the depression itself has any upside in helping you deal with the fear of rejection. If anything, it will condition you to be even more afraid of rejection due to the increased social isolation.?
The funny thing was he defeated his own argument before he even made it. He talked all about how when you crack down on this stuff you just drive people underground, and then he talked about a service you can go through to make it so you can't be tracked. Then he says we should start throttling after 3 warning letters. Uhhh...can you not connect that back to the beginning of your own argument? |

A routine accident, two balls shatter, and everyone in both balls suffocate to death in the vacuum. GREAT IDEA!

Addendum: I mentioned eugenics because creating harsher sentences for people genetically predisposed for certain behaviors is exactly the direction needed for a eugenics program to begin. Therefore, people predisposed for a particular behavior cannot and must not have their quality of life affected as a result of said predisposition. However, for the sake of public safety, measures which satisfy quality of life and the public must be implemented. I don't know what these would be, but extended jail sentences certainly don't count. |
