I think any pet owner can vouch that animals indeed do have human emotions. When I was growing up we had an older female dog and a young male dog. They were always together and you could tell that the older female was taking the motherly role over the younger dog. One day while we were all away at work and school she died of old age and for quite a while after that he just wasn't the same. He acted like he was moping around, didn't show much interest in eating and just generally seemed unhappy. But, over time, as with humans, he returned back to normal. So I definitely thing that animals go through a grief period, it would be hard to believe that they dont form bonds and notice when that is broken.

“the issue is the amount of physical memory and the hardware setup of most android phones. it installs apps to the same memory it uses for ram. with a few tweaks (apps2sd) this can be fixed and the speed increase is simply astounding. there is an issue with bloat in the default OS build but this can be fixed by loading cyanogen or any number of other mods. closed source OSes simply don't have those options.

300 or 400 years ago the girl would have been substantially more mature by the age of 11. By that time, she would have spent a fair amount of time helping her own mother with her younger brothers and sisters, so she would be fairly aware of how to take care of children etc. Not that I'm saying it would have been a good idea even then, but you can't take the same people and just move them through time. People matured a whole lot faster back then because they had to.
