They don't have to literally make a Linux distro, but there could be a bit of a potential advantage to establishing layers that could be developed as separate projects the way Linux does. Consider back when Windows lived over DOS; There were drawbacks, but DOS could be updated without altering the GUI, and that has to make the overall project smaller. Imagine if the newer Windows7 kernel could have been bolted in underneath XP's existing interface, it would have saved them money and development time, as well as pushing upgrades to otherwise reluctant consumers. They already have IE and Media Player and other things as separate projects apart from the OS, they just need to add all the little things like notepad and mspaint to the list. Another layer of separation would let all the bundles of software be interchangeable and updated form a repository, similar to what Linux does, so that they wouldn't have to simultaneously make everything before a new release. In the end they could sell the base OS, and let everything else be fluid and updated across the internet.
Good thing T. Rex's and Utahraptor's got along.

It's getting out of control in this country. I heard a story today that these 14 year old girls took pictures of themselves, not even naked, in underwear, and they were kicked out of all extra curricular activities and suspended from school, DESPITE the fact that it happened over the summer and had nothing to do with school, and they have every right to be in their underwear. No, I do not support child porn, nor do I think the pictures should be sent around the internet, news, etc. but I do support the girl's right to do whatever they want with their bodies in their private lives. When I was 14 I was fooling around with girls that were 14, does that mean I should have been kicked out of school? So now in America, you can't smoke pot, be naked, or even look at someone naked, and the list goes on and on. Land of the FREE home of the BRAVE. (But not free to be/look at naked people, smoke pot, and not brave enough to allow others to do so.)?
Because a sequel, especially after the original's long dormancy, has the capacity to take an environment, a character, a situation, a crisis, something you enjoyed from the film, etc., and run them all into the ***** ground. Too many examples to list.
